2008 Lancaster Redskins Throws Camp
July 11-13, 2008
Lancaster High School

The 2008 Lancaster Redskin Throws Camp was held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 11-13 on the premises of Lancaster High School including the fieldhouse. Approximately 60 student-athletes registered, most from the Section 6 schools, but a handful from the Utica and Binghamton area as well.

Camp director, George Rak of Lancaster, has been holding the camp for the past three years and each year registrations have increased. Word has been getting around the state that this is the premier throws camp to attend.

Instruction is provided by a number of local high school and collegiate coaches all with the objective of improving techniques and eliminating errors that cost the student-athletes precious distance in their tosses.

The weather was nearly perfect for throwing although Sunday as a JFK day as some of the drills and competition was held inside the fieldhouse due to rain. This however, gave some of the attendees who have not competed before indoors, an opportunity to experience another side of the shot put.

All facets of throws instruction was part of the camp including not only the indoor shot but also the weight toss and javelin. Because of the rain, the javelin was limited to one step throws at water bottles just to give the "campers" a feel of holding and tossing the javelin.

The competitions held at camp brings out the competitor in the student-atheltesbut more importantly the comraderie amongst the attendees is what is the most evident. There is encouragement from everyone when an individual steps into that circle and when a personal best is attained, everyone is on the same team.

It's going to be a very long wait until indoor for some of these student-athletes but with some of the basic training tools and exercises instilled upon these kids, it won't be that long.
