Observations and Musings

  • Is it me or is Starpoint blessed with extremely nice weather, the direct opposite of what the JFK invitationals receive?
  • It's a tossup between the best cheeseburgers in Section 6...the ones served at the Olean Invitational or the Starpoint Challenge...I feel like one of the Buffalo News columnists making the rounds at different restaurants and yes, I've contracted Dunlop Disease because of it...you know Dunlop Disease? That's where your stomach has just "dun lopped" over your belt.
  • I know this suggestion is controversial and quite frankly, is a safety issue and should not be encouraged, but after seeing the "cannonball tuck" and the "360" performed at recent steeplechase events, do you think that style points should be awarded as well?
  • I love the "personal domain" tents set up in the pole vault area by some of the athletes (yes, you know who I am referring to!)...the only thing missing is a microwave!
  • Hamburg coach Bob Beach's straw cowboy hat should be some sort of historical artifact when it's ready to be retired (and if you seen its condition, that should be soon!) but can you imagine the number of stories that thing could tell from over the years? I think it was new when I was running back in the early '70's!
  • Why are so many people surprised when I take photo images of them sleeping or eating at the events? What else do you do if you're not competing? And yes, coaches are fair game for these photo images as well!
  • Are the throwers the only ones who have nicknames for each other? I heard some very creative ones while hanging around the shot put and discus areas.
  • Finally, it appears Lancaster's Melissa Kurzdorfer and Lockport's Erin Miller are putting together a dance video. After watching some of the dance moves I'd say that the ladies should stick to throwing, not that I would win anything on "Dancing with the Stars"!
