Observations and Musings

  • The weather gods must have a thing about JFK, April 12, cold, windy, May 3 - rain, rain and more rain...until later in the day when it the temperature dropped about twenty degrees, lots of wind and more rain. Can't wait for ECICs later this month!
  • Note to JFK School Board...include a dome for the JFK complex in next year's budget!
  • Despite the inclement weather, kudos to the Depew squad for running a nice event. Very professional look to haivng the crews dressed in their track outfits.
  • Track & Field Innovation (to be patented) - The New Coach's Tool (no, it's not that ONE kid on your team!) - a stopwatch and voice recorder in one unit so coaches don't have to drag along the clipboard and worry about writing in the rain and getting the paperwork wet. Of course if you look at some of the latest cellphones, you have the voice recorder, digital camera, email and internet connecitons so not only can you record event times and notes but you can snap a photo of the student-athlete in action and email it to the media all within ten minutes of the conclusion of the race. No fair, it's my idea!
  • Smart thinking...the Depew Boosters selling umbrellas at the meet...must be a marketing person organizing that group!
  • Can someone explain the automated bird calls coming from the maintenance building at JFK? It must work as about a hundred birds gathered on the baseball diamond to listen to it. The only time they disbursed was when the starting pistol went off.
  • Old Fart Dept - when will the kids begin to dress for WNY weather? Am I the only one reading the weather report? Remember it is easier to remove clothing than wish you had something to wear. You all carry athletic bags, put some warm clothing in there just in case! Geeez, you make me cold watching you shiver...
  • Media Ham - I don't know which TV station it was but on the "bell lap" of one of the races, WNY Track Official John Skubis looked straight into the camera and sidestepped along the lead runner while ringing the bell and smiling for the camera. The man has no shame! C'mon John, if you want face time, I'll take all the photos that you want and make a special page for you!
  • Finally, the Fashionistas..coaches sporting new Gortex rainsuits. We ought to have them walk the long jump runways before the meet and show off the new duds.
